Cassel is a village in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, situated near the North West provincial border and about 90 km north-east of Kuruman.
Cassel village falls within the Joe Morolong Local Municipality and the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality.
The village is under the chieftaincy of the Batlhaping-ba-ga-Phuduhutswana. The last legally and traditionally recognised chief, Kgosi Mothusi Godfrey Thaganyane is deceased.
The late Kgosi Mothusi G. Thaganyane did not have a son. Consequently, the chieftaincy is yet to be traditionally handed over to his eldest daughter. However the daughter is still a minor and as a result the chieftaincy is still under controversial discussions as to who has to be an interim chief.
Cassel village has very poor infrastructure especially water and sanitation. Residents get water from communal taps while also using pit toilets.
The village has a high unemployment rate and as a result, most of the economically active people are work in the towns of Kuruman and Kathu, either as mine workers or domestic workers.
The village also has an annual problem or experience of people who find themselves working as seasonal workers in the towns of Kakamas and Upington.
