Garies, Northern Cape

Garies is a small agricultural town situated along the N7 National Route in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, about 110 km south of Springbok, the chief town of the Namaqualand district.

The name Garies is Khoekhoen and means ‘couchgrass’, Afrikaans ‘kweek’.

The town is in the Namaqualand district, at the foot of the Kamiesberg, 46 km south of Kamieskroon and 146 km northwest of Vanrhynsdorp.

Garies falls within the Kamiesberg Local Municipality and the Namakwa District Municipality. Garies is the main town and administrative centre/seat of Kamiesberg Local Municipality.

The Letterklip provincial heritage site is situated just west of town.
