Amsterdamhoek is a charming riverside suburb situated along the banks of the Swartkops River and near its mouth, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, approximately 10 km from the city centre of Gqeberha (formerly known as Port Elizabeth).
Amsterdamhoek falls within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, and despite it being part of the city, it has the ambiance of a quaint fishing village with its rustic and fairly large, spacious homes (although many have been revamped or even rebuilt since the 1970’s), most having beautiful views of the river.
The area offers a peaceful retreat with scenic river views and a relaxed atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a tranquil coastal experience. From many places, the waters of the Indian Ocean are also visible, creating magnificent backdrops.
Amsterdamhoek remains popular amongst fishermen, who love to bask on the river’s banks, enjoying the warm South African sunshine and the vistas of the Eastern Cape. Along with them, there are often families playing in the warm river’s waters, while the clear coastal air is bracing.
The suburb creates a feeling of being far from the city, even remote. Really, though, Amsterdamhoek is less than 10 km from the heart of the city, and within a short drive from the many beaches that Port Elizabeth (officially renamed Gqeberha) has to offer, as well as the shopping malls, historical attractions, and natural areas.
